There was nobody around when I came in, and I sat down on a chair, trying to be unassuming as possible. After waiting a few minutes Lance walked in, just out of the shower and clad only in a towel. Now, I don’t personally swing that way, but this guy looks good. He’s simply one of those men that look really good all the time. Again, don’t swing that way; but if I did, I would be all over that in a heartbeat, quicker than lightning.
So he invited me in and served me something to eat. We chatted for a bit, and I got a peek inside his brain. Lance must know everything there is to know about pokémon. I got a lot of wonderful pointers. He even gave my Fearow and Pinsir the TMs for Hyper Beam. Lance is all about Hyper Beam, he tells me it’s the best attack you can teach a pokémon. (Side note: if you ever meet him, don’t mention Giga Impact. Sore subject.)
After shooting the breeze for a little while, we got down to business. I still wasn’t fully aware of why Lance wanted to help me except for the goodness of his heart, but he let me in on a little secret that explained it all. Leaning close, Lance told me that he himself was once a poking addict. Imagine that! The great Lance was once on my level! Anyway, it really gave me hope for the future. He invited me up to his private box to watch the opening ceremonies, and I got to dine on Tauros steak and enjoy the show.
I went over there again today and watched the first day’s battles, making sure to keep an eye out for the stranger with my Lickitung. I explained to Lance how I felt about Lickitung and, much to my surprise, he completely understood. He said he’d once been in love with a Dragonite and its “beautiful, beautiful Hyper Beam”.
After a few matches I spotted the man with the turquoise jumpsuit and raced from the room to try and find him. Tracking him down to the trainer’s locker rooms just off of the stadium floor, I waited for him to jump in the shower and leave his pokéballs behind. They were all marked with a star sticker, but I had to release a few before I found Lickitung. Not the strongest team ever. A Pikachu with some weird head growth, a Charmeleon, a Butterfree, and finally my Lickitung! I grabbed her by the arm and tore out of the room in a flash.
I didn’t stop until I felt I was a safe distance away. Kneeling down, I embraced Lickitung and held her close. But she didn’t return my hug. She just stared at me with her cold eyes, judgmental and harsh. I was still the worst person in the world to her. It took me a good 15 minutes of apologizing before she would even look at me, and a good half an hour after that to explain all I had been through. Something about my harrowing tale must have touched her, because I saw the slightest hint of worry darken her features.
As I rambled on, she held up a finger to my lips to stop me. Then, I was given the (excuse the expression) worst tongue-lashing I’ve ever received in my life. Using only her words, she tore me down as a man until I was on the verge of tears. I can’t understand her language, but her gestures were very harsh and conveyed her tone well enough. When I thought it was over between us, and that she would happily go on with her new trainer, Lickitung changed her tone and made a pact with me. If I could prove myself to her, really show that I had changed and was sorry before she had to leave the tournament, she would forgive me and come with me. On that, she stole away back to her trainer, a tear on the edge of her snout.
Prove myself. I can do that. I just have to…
I’ll ask Lance for advice.
